When someone is sent to prison, their family may feel as if they too, are serving a sentence. In differing ways, each member of the family has to cope with the trauma of arrest, with the tension of waiting for a court case to happen, with coming to terms with the length of a prison sentence, with separation from a loved one. The family will gradually learn about the practicalities of the prison system, or about the best ways to deal with the concerns and questions of children and neighbours. |
Prisoners’ Families Infoline was started as a way of supporting family members during this time. You may have a simple question, about visiting hours, or a more complex one, eg, what do I tell the children?
Our helpline provides a listening ear to help you to discover what is best for you in your situation.
